What are pastels?
Pastels are made from the same pigments used in making all fine art paints. The powdered pigments are ground into a paste, combined with a binder and formed into sticks. Since they have no liquid binder they will not darken, fade, yellow or crack as they age. Pastels from the 16th century exist today as fresh as the day they were painted. Under a microscope a particle of pastel pigment looks almost diamond like, with many different facets. Wet mediums sink into the surface but pastels rest on the surface; this enables the many facets to reflect color in several different directions. Pastels are capable of both gentle subtleties and brilliant color intensity that paint cannot match.
